Museum of the Liberation of Paris

The Musée de la Libération de Paris - Musée du Général Leclerc - Musée Jean Moulin was inaugurated on Place Denfert-Rochereau in 2019, to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Liberation of Paris. It is part of the Paris Musées public establishment. Heir to a first municipal museum, founded in 1994 from the bequest of a friend of Jean Moulin and the donation of the Fondation Maréchal Leclerc de Hauteclocque, it has been enriched over time by gifts and bequests from Jean Moulin's family, by donations from former members of the 2nd DB and by acquisitions of objects and photographs from the Liberation of Paris. The museum moved from its location above the Montparnasse train station to the more accessible pavilions on Place Denfert-Rochereau. This choice was prompted by the existence of an underground space transformed during the war into a passive defense shelter for the administrative services of the Préfecture de la Seine. It was here that the headquarters of the Forces françaises de l'Intérieur (FFI) de la région parisienne, under the command of Colonel Rol, set up during the week of the Liberation of Paris.

A new scenography welcomes visitors to present, in a beautiful setting, the history of the occupation of France, the Resistance, the fighting and the Liberation of Paris through the careers of two great figures, Jean Moulin and Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, as well as the many men and women who accompanied them in the Resistance or in combat. More than three hundred objects, documents and photographs tell the story of these men and women, in a chronological and complex manner. Both an introduction to the history of the Second World War and a deeper understanding of the actions of Jean Moulin and General Leclerc, the tour is based on the stories of resistance fighters and soldiers, supported by moving personal objects. At the end of the tour, visitors descend into the Rol-Tanguy headquarters, where they can discover Colonel Rol-Tanguy's command post, which has been preserved in its original state, complete with atmospheric sound system. For the more adventurous, aged 12 and over, an immersive mixed reality experience (augmented reality + virtual reality), “Insurrection 44”, is available upon registration at the museum reception desk. For younger visitors aged 8 and over, a serious game on a tablet, “Mission Rol-Tanguy”, lets families explore the command post. Guided tours are organized on a regular basis, supplemented by themed tours on special occasions.

The museum is aimed at the school public but also to curious people and families, for whom it serves as a platform to exchange on family history. Indeed, the objective of the course is to make the best possible understanding of this singular history that resonates from generation to generation and, by creating bridges between the past and the present, to give visitors keys to understand today’s world.

The visit to the permanent route is free, as is the visit to Colonel Rol-Tanguy’s command post. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, exhibitions and cultural programs.
